Camp Learning story

Believe you can and you're halfway there.

Camp Makahika 2019.

For me the most useful learning I done at camp was when I did orientering with my buddy (Deyva). When I went to do orientering with my buddy, we went round campgrounds to find clippers so we could clip the numbers of our paper we were given to. During orientering I was able to Manage Myself because without a teacher me and my buddy were able to make good choices, follow what our instructor said to us and behave ourselves. This learning can help me in the future because we mistakes in this challenge but we learnt from them so we can all learn from the mistakes.

The most important thing that I will learn from is the bush walk. At the time I didn’t think this would happen but I got picked to be leader for the first bit of our walk. After having experienced the walk, I felt exhausted because every time we stopped I would look at my watch and say in my head “4 hours already, 4 HOURS!”. I was able to Relate to others because on the walk I had two friends who were able to stick with me the whole way through and I could stick with them (Dqzahnell and Likalia). This learning can help me in the future to know that if something is hard not to give up and keep going.

The time I had to face my fears on two activities was not what I was expecting. Having experienced High ropes, I know realise that it helped me with a little bit of conquering my fear. At first I questioned myself a lot of times (Should I go on the flying flox? or should I not?). Most importantly I have learned that if I didn't go to camp, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish those things that helped me achieve half of my fears of heights.

At camp we had four instructors. Each instructors was unique. When I got to camp, I met all for instructors. They introduced themselves to us and we got to introduce ourselves to them. My first activity I did was bivouac building and we got to met Amy. The learning she taught us was how to build bush huts in the wild. The next station was fire making. There was Eta teaching us how to make fire, and just like Amy's station teaching us how to live in the wild. After our break we went straight to orientering. There was Hone sending us all over campgrounds. And Alex the constructor of our bushwalk. Leaving us to think to make our own decisions about where/when to stop.

When I was leaving camp I was thinking about the great things that I was able to do with the constructors, cooks and my friends as I was at camp. My feelings for that camp are over board. I will miss camp makahika because
  • I got to know what it is like having a day of school but instead of school at camp
And
  • I was mentioned for many things like persevering when things were hard in our activities
And that is Camp Makahika 2019!
